Situation:

Michael Swango was a healthcare worker suspected of murdering dozens of patients under his care. Incontrovertible proof was needed in order to prosecute.

Action:

NMS Labs was hired to develop innovative testing and analytical methods for identifying the chemicals used in the crimes.

Results:

Applying new analytical strategies to difficult samples, NMS Labs’ analyses were critical to the investigation. Dr. Swango pled guilty to murder and was sentenced to three consecutive life terms without parole. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affaits Office of Inspector General (VAOIG) presented a Bronze Eagle Award to NMS founder and Forensic Toxicologist, Fredric Rieders, Ph.D., and to Kevin Ballard, M.D., Ph.D., the company's director of research and development, in recognition of their "extraordinary scientific efforts" in helping crack the Swango case. « Return to Forensic Case Files
