Test Processing

Can I tell you verbally what tests I want performed?

To be compliant with CLIA ’88 Regulations (42 CFR Part 493.1105), NMS Labs will perform tests only at the written or electronic request of an authorized representative. Requests for laboratory reports to third parties are permitted only if NMS Labs obtains written authorization to do so from an authorized person at the submitting agency.

How can I add tests to my request?

Additional tests may be ordered on previously submitted specimens assuming there is sufficient specimen volume and the sample meets the added test collection requirements. A signed Add Test Authorization Form will be required. Please contact Clinical Client Support at 1.866.522.2206, Forensic Client Support at 1.866.522.2216, or Criminalistic Client Support at 1.800.522.6671, ext. 1328.

Can I cancel testing requested?

If a cancellation request is received prior to test setup, the request will be honored and cancelled “per client request” at no charge. Cancellation requests received following test setup cannot be honored. Testing in progress will be completed, a report issued, and the testing charges applied to the invoice.

For tests cancelled internally by NMS Labs, charges will be automatically credited to the invoice. If testing is a comprehensive panel and less than 50% of the testing components have been cancelled, NMS will credit the charges for testing. Panels with at least 50 % or more of the components reported will be charged. ↑ Top

Sample Submission

How do I prepare my samples for submission?

It is critical that you follow proper sample preparation and submission protocols in order to ensure the integrity of your test results. Please refer to the Sample Submission section of our website for full details.

What happens if the Test Requisition Form or other paperwork arrives at NMS Labs incomplete?

Improperly completed or incomplete test requisition forms may delay testing and increase turnaround time. NMS Labs staff will make every attempt to clarify questions by contacting the client in a timely manner. When there is a lack of information (e.g., patient information, test information), clarification may be necessary prior to analysis of specimens, potentially leading to extended turnaround times and/or information gaps.

What happens to “Unacceptable Specimens”?

In some instances, specimens cannot be analyzed because of improper collection, degradation, or damage during shipping. A Client Support Representative will attempt to communicate such problems by calling the client within 24 hours.

How can I reduce turnaround time delays?

To reduce turnaround time delays, please make sure to review the specimen requirements for the tests requested. Check to make sure the specimen is properly submitted, including:
  1. Submit specimen matrix (sample type) that matches test code ordered.
  2. Temperature requirements (room temperature, refrigerated, frozen), and ship accordingly
  3. Indicate specimen type (serum, plasma, blood, urine, stool, vitreous, meconium, etc.)
  4. Specimen identification should be clearly marked on the sample container(s)
  5. Complete patient information on requisition form

Can samples be shipped to another individual after testing is complete?

Yes. Specimens can be shipped from NMS Labs to outside experts or other laboratories for additional testing at the written request of the sender. In either case, a specimen return surcharge plus shipping charges per case, will be applied. If the forwarding address is different from the sender, the written request must include the full address, telephone number, and contact person. ↑ Top

For tests cancelled internally by NMS Labs, charges will be automatically credited to the invoice. It is the policy of NMS not to discuss any test results directly with the patient.

What is the definition of Reporting Limit (RL)?

The Reporting Limit is an administratively defined concentration where quantitative results below this value will not be reported. In many assays, the reporting limit represents the limit of quantitation (LOQ) for the test. ↑ Top
