Disulfiram (DEDTC Metabolite), Urine Test (1790U)

Analysis Code 1790U
Test Name Disulfiram (DEDTC Metabolite), Urine
Test Includes Diethyldithiocarbamate [SP]
Compound Synonym(s) Antabuse DEDTC Diethyldithiocarbamate Disulfiram Metabolite
Purpose Therapeutic Drug Monitoring; Compliance Monitoring
Category Alcohol Deterrent
Method(s) Spectrophotometry (SP)
Specimen Requirements 15 mL Urine
Transport Temperature Frozen
Specimen Container NMS Labs has no experimental or literature-based data regarding the choice of specific specimen collection containers for this test.
Special Handling None
Light Protection Required Not Required
Stability Room Temperature: Undetermined Refrigerated: Undetermined Frozen (-20 °C): Undetermined Disulfiram is rapidly and completely reduced to diethyldithiocarbamate (DEDTC) in blood within 4 minutes of addition to human blood or plasma. DEDTC, an excellent chelator of numerous metal ions, has an in vitro half-life of approximately 70 minutes in either human blood or plasma at room temperature, but nonenzymatically degraded (especially in an acid medium) to carbon disulfide and diethylamine.

It is required that specimens be frozen within one hour of drawing blood or urine. In the event that specimens are not frozen within this timeframe the utility of the test is compromised.
Rejection Criteria Glass container.
Day(s) Test Set-up [SP] Monday 1 day
Suggested CPT Code [SP] 84311
