MDPV is an analogues of pyrovalerone which is a controlled substance in the USA and Europe. Pyrovalerone was originally developed for its treatment of chronic fatigue, lethargy and weight loss. Its analogues, MDPV is also a stimulant and is used because of its ability to produce CNS stimulation and euphoria in modest doses (about 5-20mg), but may produce fatigue, paranoia and panic attacks in individuals who have reportedly taken as little as 10-15mg. Because of the increasing use of designer stimulants, NMS Labs has developed several methods for detecting MDPV and mephedrone, both qualitatively and quantitatively. A full scan gas chromatographic method with mass spectral detection is used as a screening tool for postmortem and police cases. A liquid chromatography, tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for the quantification of these substances.
NMS Labs presented a case study at the 2011 SOFT-TIAFT meeting of our first positive MDPV case from October 2010. The presentation is summarized in a research poster. Request a PDF of the poster.
NMS Labs is the only independent forensic facility in the nation to be certified by both the ABFT (American Board of Forensic Toxicology) and ANAB-ASCLD/LAB-International (ANSI/ASQ National Accreditation Board-American Society of Crime Lab Directors/Lab Accreditation Board ISO 17025). ISO 17025 accreditation covers the disciplines of Toxicology, DNA, serology and controlled substances. We diligently maintain and exceed the high standards set by these organizations, so that you can have the utmost confidence in your testing results.
